Junior Specialist in RNA Biochemistry (JPF01522)

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California Santa Barbara invites applications for a one-year, part-time Junior Specialist position, with the anticipated soonest start date of July 1, 2019. The department is looking for an exceptional individual with a particular emphasis in the area of Biochemistry. The major goals of the junior Specialist will be to contribute and to lead a research project aiming at exploring RNA polymerization catalysis by RNA.

Responsibilities will be to conduct specialized preparative and analytical experiments to probe the composition, structure and reactivity of various RNA molecular constructs.

To meet the basic qualifications, all applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry or a Bachelor's degree in a related field at the time of application.

For additional qualifications, the applicant must have practical experience working with RNA in a laboratory setting for at least two to three quarters or two semesters and have followed courses related to RNA biochemistry.

For preferred qualifications, successful candidates may have previous experience working in a research laboratory. The candidate will also have experience developing and executing biochemical protocols working with RNA, including design, preparation and purification of RNA constructs, RNA characterization by native and denaturing PAGE, chemical probing of RNA structures, in vitro selection of RNA, as well as supervision of laboratory personnel. The candidate must also be extremely well organized, and detail oriented. These qualities will be assessed when inquiry is made with the candidate's references.
